it would be cool if fat dudes without big beards were considered hot sometimes too.
I realized today that the main reason for the “hot fat dude must also include beard” thing is part of the whole “fat people are required to perform a higher and more perfect expression of gender”.
like usually this sort of thing is more easily identifiable in fat women, who have to be hyper feminine to be considered “attractive” by the mainstream. but I sort of blinked today and realized, oh. fat men must have beards to be attractive for the same reason fat men must wear suits and look dapper to be attractive, just like fat women have to have perfect eyeliner and wear cute pinup clothing. higher, more intense expression of gender, executed perfectly and without flaw is required for fat people to be seen as attractive.
i think it’s important to mention a major thing a beard does, other than potentially act as part of a performance of masculinity, is cover double chins. i legitimately feel leaving that out is a major oversight. double chins are societally reviled and rarely ever depicted in supposedly fat positive art.
i’ve known fat women to literally tape the skin of their neck up under their hair to try to get rid of them– not to mention trying to contour them away with makeup. (i’ve personally done both. let’s talk about the utter misery of trying to exist in public with your skin taped and painted in place, terrified if any of it fails you will be treated as disgusting.) and fat men must grow a beard, and just the right kind of hyper-groomed beard, lest they be labeled disgusting neckbeards. fat people of all genders are compelled to “learn their angles” for photos, so they can create the illusion of not having double chins if only in still images. do you know how many photos with loved ones your fat friends duck out of because they can’t know how it will turn out, and don’t want to be mocked?
accept double chins as normal. accept that you can be attracted to people with double chins. stop requiring heightened gender performance and discomfort from fat people. stop forcing tape and makeup and beards and tactical angles on fat people.

“When [Disgrace] published the ‘Ruff Sex’ portraits in On Our Backs in 1989, I ran one photo as the centerfold - a girl gang bang that showed it’s femme bottom in the outer reaches of sensation. It was an amazing construction of a classic girl fucked into insensibility by strangers who carry that ‘don’t know or care’ air about them. The magazine was immediately returned by most of our retailers, and never made it though the mail to others. ‘Ruff Sex’ was seen as the unthinkable - a lesbian oxymoron. How could women be so rough with each other? How could there be a ‘victim’ and her tormentors? How could they ‘use’ her that way? And to top it off, how could these women be such remorseless exhibitionists as to perform the whole scene for the camera?
None of these questions would be relevant if it weren’t for the assumptions that we have about female sexuality: deferential, gentle, nurturing, modest. We are surprised to see women put their bodies to the test sexually, to go to the extreme - although this is exactly what a woman’s body is made for: extremes, endurance.
One thing about women who are into masochism is the stamina factor - the endurance, and the yearning for release through endurance. Perhaps the greatest feat of ‘Ruff Sex’ is the players look out of control - as candid and spontaneous as spit-”Susie Bright, Nothing But The Girl: The Blatant Lesbian Image (1996), photo from Love Bites (1991) shot by Del LaGrace Volcano

It breaks my heart to see how underrated pigeons are. The fact that we had literally domesticated them, making them absolutely dependent on us and now that we’ve abandoned them, we treat them poorly when they try to coexist with us. It’s our responsibility for how they have adapted, how they can’t build nests and how they try to find food wherever we are. Please be nice to pigeons

The world must help Brazil preserve the Amazon, says Lula
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva Wednesday insisted that “The world must help” his country preserve the Amazon after deforestation in that natural area went down by 33.6% in the first semester of 2023, following Lula’s Jan. 1 inauguration.
“We know the responsibility it means to convince the world that investing is cheap if it is to keep the forest standing,” said Lula during breakfast with foreign correspondents at the Planalto Presidential Palace.
The eight member countries of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO) are to convene next week for the first time since 2009 to discuss policies to preserve the world’s largest rainforest. In this regard, Lula said his government intends to “share with the world’s science the research on the region’s biodiversity” and seek ways to make it possible to “work without destroying” the biome.
With next week’s encounter in the city of Belém on Aug. 8 and 9 serving as a preparation for the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference COP28 to be held from November 30 in the United Arab Emirates, Lula stressed that “the world needs to see this meeting as a historic framework for the discussion of the climate issue.”

End blood quantum now
Blood quantum is how much native blood you have in you and it needs to be a certain threshold to qualify you as a tribal member. Blood quantum varies from tribe to tribe.
It means my mom is a tribal member but because my dad is outside of my tribe… I don’t have enough tribal blood to enroll. Neither does my daughter. Our “official” indigeneity ended with me.
My dad is still native tho. Just southern native. Others have two parents enrolled in separate tribes and can’t enroll in either one despite being Full native because their parents were mixed with other tribes so they don’t have enough blood of Any tribe to qualify.
And to what end are they doing this?
Under the treaties the US govt can lay no claim to native land. So how do they fix that? Get rid of the natives, of course.
And since they can’t slaughter us in broad daylight anymore they did the next best thing. What the colonial government has ALWAYS done to us and other poc.
Made up a bunch of arbitrary laws to restrain and limit our power and numbers.
And this can’t continue. We are the only race who needs to apply to be part of the community we were born into. The only race who needs to prove our blood.
And that’s the thing: it’s not even based on blood. Racist scientists defined who was a full-blooded native based on things like shoe size, head circumference, and skin pigment.
Not blood. And besides that it wasn’t uncommon for outsiders to become part of a tribe!! You didn’t need to be native by blood to be native! Blood quantum has made it IMPOSSIBLE for them to qualify and made it impossible for tribes to practice that long time aspect of our culture.
So please share this post. So many people legitimately think natives are extinct and even less are aware that we do more than just sit around drinking all day. Few people have good feelings about us and within that there are a few who actively help. Please be one of those few.
We need support and allies and for our voices to be heard. Please don’t let this post just be me screaming into a void. We need people to know what blood quantum is, how archaic and harmful it is, and to help us spread awareness to people who otherwise would ignore us. Use your privilege.
At the center of this is blood quantum, the system imposed by the U.S. government to determine tribal membership. A new Wilder Foundation Research study projects that unless there is a major change to the criteria, Red Lake, like many tribes across the nation, faces catastrophic population loss in coming years.
Wilder Research scientist Nicole MartinRogers is blunt about what’s ahead for the Red Lake Nation.
“A tribal population that is right now about 16,000, is going to drop to 1,000 people potentially or under in the next 100 years, if they continue to maintain their current enrollment criteria of one-quarter blood quantum,” she said. “That’s a pretty scary thing.”
[ID: A screenshot of text reading: They did plan this. Native Americans are the only people in the entire world that can only legally identify with their culture based on “blood quantum.” Plus most everyone when the Turtle Mountain reservation was first created, was listed as half blood even if they were full blood. It was designed so we are forced to either go legally extinct so they can take our lands and destroy our culture, or to inbreed with each other so much that it makes us incredibly unhealthy and we go extinct and they can take our lands and destroy our culture. We must be the change to make our culture healthy, thriving, and without fear of the government coming in and saying “Ah well according to our new calculations none of you have the proper blood quantum, so these kettle lakes and mountains are ours to do whatever we want with.” It’s just a racist law that colonists put into place and we should take that shroud off of ourselves to help better the future for our descendants /End first ID]

I, a hearing person who likes subtitles just as a preference, shouldn’t have to read a subtitle that’s obvious nonsense, go back a couple seconds, and listen again in order to figure out what’s going on. An accessibility feature should not be the most half-assed part of a professionally made production. Scripted media has absolutely no excuse for not having subtitles or having subtitles that aren’t perfectly verbatim. Professional captioning services should be ashamed of the shoddy work that they put out. Captions should be treated as a part of the production, just like filming, editing, audio balancing, etc - and anything that releases with missing or bad captions should be seen as unfinished

As overdoses in Edmonton reach record-high levels, users can visit a free drug-checking site that will analyze substances to determine what is in them and whether they’ve been cut with high-potency materials.
The Spectrum drug testing program, which operates Monday and Friday afternoons at 105th Street and Jasper Avenue, uses a Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrometer to analyze stimulants, including cocaine, methamphetamine and MDMA, and opioids like heroin and fentanyl.
Spectrum, launched last week by the Queer and Trans Health Collective, is the first physical site in Edmonton to offer a drug-checking service.
“We know that people are going to use substances whether we like it or not," Jess Murray, the collective’s harm-reduction manager, said in an interview last week.
"We just want to make sure that if they are using substances, they know what’s in the substances, they’re able to get supplies for their substances to use them more safely."
